For the past year I have been hawking TravCon2016 (The annual conference for traveling healthcare professionals) to all of the travelers that I know. I was trying to sell you on the idea of coming to the conference and the benefits of going. Most people flat out rejected the idea. Guess what – I’m already starting again for next year!
Why?!? Because I realized that TravCon is like the full on learning immersion program for being a traveling healthcare professional. There is only so much that you can read, watch or chat about when it comes to learning about the traveling healthcare arena. TravCon immerses you in the culture, education and language of being a traveling healthcare professional. From morning to night you are surrounded by traveling healthcare professionals and people in the industry. You eat 3 meals a day with them, go to seminars with them and rub elbows during social events. So mark it on your calendar folks for next year: September 17-19 at Bally’s in Las Vegas.
In the meanwhile, he is my recap of what made the conference so special:
1. THE PEOPLE!
From morning to night (if you so choose) you have the opportunity to be surrounded by traveling healthcare professionals and those who work in the industry as recruiters, account execs, etc. You can use that time to pick their brains about what works, what doesn’t work, where have you been, who do you travel with, where do you stay, etc. There is a world of knowledge just to gain just from the people at this conference.
The people that I spent most of my time with at this conference were an amazing group of traveling therapists. We were smiling and laughing everywhere that we went and through everything that we did. I honestly had a blast with this group and while most of met for the first time at this conference, I know that I made friends for life!
2. The socialization
Along with the people comes the socialization, which is a big part of this conference. Traveling can be very lonely and isolating at times. I really appreciate that TravCon aims to bring travelers together; not just to learn but to also be together. Staffing agencies and companies sponsor dinners and events where they invite travelers to come as groups. There is also the iconic AfterParty, where the conference rents out an entire bar 53 floors up for the attendees to kick back, dance and enjoy the beautiful view during the last night of the conference. I know many people use TravCon as a time where they reunite with other travelers that they have met along the road and I think that it is the perfect place for that. I saw friends who I have not seen in months and was thrilled to spend time with them.
3. The sessions
The seminars this year were outstanding. Topics ranged from tax issues such as understanding tax homes, understanding per diems, filing multi state taxes to other topics such as canceling a contract, understanding the bill rate, medical spanish, negotiating with multiple companies, Destination: Hawaii and “extreme” nursing. After being a traveler for 6 years I did not think that there was still a lot left for me to learn, but I honestly have to say that I learned an extraordinary amount of information from these sessions. Kudos to the presenters!
4. The exhibit Hall
The exhibit hall is the center of the conference. This is where you go to eat breakfast and lunch and also where all of the staffing agencies and other companies have booths. The name of the game in the exhibit hall is to get people to your booth; hence there are a lot of FUN booths! I had a blast this year in the exhibit hall playing games, grabbing a life time supply of free pens and connecting with the people running the booths.
If you ever want to talk to a recruiter here is your chance. The whole hall is filled with recruiters who are looking to talk and mingle and this is the time that you can ask questions and see an answer face to face. If you are lucky you could even meet your future recruiter here!
5. Las Vegas!
Last but not least, all of the conference is set to the beautiful back drop of Las Vegas. During my free time I got to roam the strip from end to end, watch the iconic water show at The Bellagio, relax at the pool and go to some AMAZING restaurants! Viva Las Vegas!
Until next year….
